Boys Be... - Anime Review

A group of Japanese high school friends experience the joy, trauma, and confusion of falling in love. Their stories are told through the passing of three seasons.

Boys Be...

The focus is on struggling artist Kyoichi and sprinter Chiharu, who have known each other since kindergarten.

Review: Boys Be...

Although the live-action intro sequence will make you wonder whether it is an anime or not, Boys Be... is a very nice series.

Each introspective episode begins and ends with a philosophical / poetic quote which loosely sums up what's in it.

Boys Be...

I find that this sets the proper mood.

While Boys Be is centered on Kyoichi and Chiharu, it actually revolves around seven or eight main characters and their love lives. Each subplot is unique and full of emotional insights.

The animation is good, even if there isn't any real action in stuff like this (Editor's note: The animation is purely digital, as is the case with "Love Hina").

The artwork is excellent, as the characters are quite nicely drawn, if a bit inconsistent in some episodes (e.g. Chiharu looked rather masculine in one ep).

Many things make Boys Be worth watching -- the witty dialogue, memorable characters, heartwarming stories...

Boys Be...

The characterization is very strong -- from the funny pervert Makoto to the impatient Aki -- everyone is distinctly portrayed and full of personality. If there's one thing to gripe about this series it would have to be its length.

Boys Be is only thirteen episodes long, and it leaves some plot holes. Enjoy the ride while it lasts, this one's bound to leave you hankering for your adolescent memories.

Miscellanies: Boys Be...

There's a sequel to Boys Be anime, but unfortunately it does not follow-up on the original series.

The soundtrack is also worth checking out.
