I watched this forever ago, but frankly, when I was looking at the list ofreviews I need to accomplish (there are 30 of them including this, by the way)
it stood out.
Not necessarily in a good way, just as something that I could stand to get
done. So why the hell not get it done? Especially since I can, for the most part, review it as its own entity while
barely acknowledging the first season.
Kuroshitsuji II Anime Review
Jump ahead, a little more than a year after Kuroshitsuji ended. We open up with some kid Alois Trancy, who also has a demon butler, this
one by the name of Claude.
But you only really have them temporarily, and then we get Ciel back
with Sebastian, but Ciel has no memories really, of what happened in the
first season. The thing is, there isn't much of a story.
Alois has some weirdo obsession with Ciel, and then Claude gets some
weirdo obsession with Ciel, and it's all just sort of creepy. Also, stupid and not thought out very well, at least from where I'm
standing.
A season devoted to people obsessing over the main character? Look guys,
that's just awkward.
The Characters: Kuroshitsuji II
Well...the cast from the original that show up? They're all the same. Still perfectly fine, with the exception of Lizzie, who just needs to be
gagged because MY GOD GIRL SHUT UP.
But then... then we get Alois and Claude. Alois: he is totally batshit insane, a twisted little bastard. He rips his servant's eye out.
Who does that!?! Sure, Ciel had some issues and wasn't exactly a normal
12-year-old, but he was actually a really freaking good kid. Alois? Not so much. He's just nuts. Also, I hate him. Passionately.
There was nothing likeable about his character. Granted, I am open to other opinions and if someone can tell me
something that should actually make me sympathize with him, all right
then.
But I don't care how shit-tastic his past was; I don't accept that as a
reason to sympathize. Claude: Know something? Everyone seems to hate Claude. But I don't hate Claude.
I look at dear Claude and go, “Well, you sir are actually acting the way
a demon should act. As much as I love all the BL between Sebby and Ciel, I applaud you for
acting like what you are”. Claude is a demon. Claude acts...like a
DEMON.
Basically what I'm saying here, is Claude is fantastic and Alois needs
to be beaten thoroughly upon the head.
The “Antagonist”: Kuroshitsuji II
I don't have much to say here, other than...an angry
little kid is not an effective antagonist. A crazy angel who wants to purify things and really sees what they're
doing as right? That's an effective antagonist.
A dark wizard who is after power and power alone? That's an effective
antagonist. A demon who feeds on pain and makes people feel it to eat it? That's an
effective antagonist.
Basically, I spent a lot of Kuro II going, “Hang on, this is the bad
guy? Pfffft.”
Conclusion?
Honestly...I liked the first season. I did. I mean, it wasn't anything spectacular, but it was enjoyable. Then
season two came in and ruined it.
They introduced a poorly thought-out plot, they introduced a
failure-ific bad guy...it all just seemed very half-assed to me.
If you enjoyed Kuroshitsuji first season, there is a sliver of a chance you will
enjoy the second, but I know more people who join me in bitching about
it than people who actually liked it.
Now if you want to give it a chance, go for it, just don't say I didn't
warn you. Because anyone who says that is being directed back to this review.
However. I always try to look on the bright side, so let me try to think
of one good thing about season two... Aha! Undertaker was still there.
That is definitely a good thing. Undertaker improves everything. Particularly funeral homes. Also, the music was pretty good.
My rating: 4/10
Because fuck you, that's why ...Actually it's for taking a reasonably good series and then bashing it
to death by producing a shitty second season.
