Love Hina Spring Special

Fearing the prospect of failing yet again, Keitaro runs away where his friends can't find him. But Naru and the rest of the Hinata Sou girls are determined to bring Keitaro back... even if it means travelling to a remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!

Review: Love Hina Spring Special

Love Hina Spring Special is a 45-minute episode that takes place after the Love Hina Christmas Special. Although it's not meant to be an independent feature, the story can pretty much stand on its own.

Keitaro and Naru have come to terms with their feelings for each other, and they are determined to get into Tokyo U together this time. But Keitaro dozes off during the test... which prompts him to run away in shame.

He can't face Naru, nor can he face the prospect of failing again. Keitaro winds up (don't ask how) on a faraway island where he meets a young orphan girl named Nyamo. Keitaro decides to help out Nyamo instead, abandoning his own dreams of Tokyo U.

I can't say I was pleased with the Love Hina Spring Special. For starters, the wackiness and humor I found so endearing in the series seems to have disappeared completely.

The half-baked subplot about Nyamo was boring to boot. I mean, come on! Who cares about some island girl and a bunch of turtles, we're talking about Love Hina here!

We want to see more of Keitaro, Naru, and the rest of the Hinata Sou gang! It doesn't help that Shinobu spends majority of the screening time sniveling either.

I couldn't comprehend what this "special" was trying to convey, and I was very disappointed with it to say the least.

Oh well, at least the visuals remained crisp and vibrant and I heard the ever-cute "Sakurasaku" during the end credits roll...

While Love Hina Spring Special won't have you running to compile your worst anime list, it's a special we can pretty much do without.
