Maris is a Thanatosian. Thanatosians are six times stronger than earthlings. As a result, Maris almost always ends up breaking and damaging things. It has
gotten so far out of hand that she's up to her neck in debts, since she has to
pay for everyhting she wrecks.
While working for the Space Patrol's Special Police, Maris is assigned to a
case that could very well change her life.
The son of an extremely wealthy politician has been kidnapped, and Maris is
dispatched to rescue him. If she plays her cards right, she may just escape
poverty forever!
Review: Maris the Chojo
Maris the Chojo is one of renowned manga artist Ms. Rumiko Takahashi's earlier
works. The original manga version is simple, short, and sweet. Unfortunately, the anime version I'm reviewing now is the exact opposite.
While the zany plot is more or less retained, the execution is what spoils the
Maris the Chojo anime.
Things unfold slowly, and everything just gets so long-winded. There are a lot of useless panning shots and extended scenes where characters
traverse -- whether walking on land or flying through space.
I can only marvel at how they managed to lengthen a very short manga story to
a 45-minute anime feature.
Maris the Chojo art and animation are okay. Character designs are actually better compared to the primeval-looking manga
sketches. The overall look and feel is somewhat dated, but it's generally not bad.
If I were to rate the manga version though, I'd give it 3.5 stars despite the
less attractive art. This anime isn't bad, it just wasn't done right.
