Three years have passed since the events chronicled in the Nadesico TV series.
Akito, Yurika, and Ines have been missing and presumed dead after an accident,
and Ruri Hoshino is now the captain of the Nadesico B.
The Nadesico B is sent to Amaterasu to independently investigate attacks on
some of the colonies. But as Ruri and her crew probe deeper into what's
happening, the computer systems go haywire and the word "OTIKA" flashes
all over the Nadesico and Amaterasu.
Ruri soon realizes that Akito is still alive, and he's involved in something
that Ruri may not be able to handle on her own. And so Ruri goes back to earth
to find her old crewmates... hopefully their combined efforts would be enough
to do what must be done...
Review: Martian Successor Nadesico The Prince of Darkness
Having been used to the predominantly light and cheery atmosphere of the TV
series, I found Nadesico The Prince of Darkness to be a rather depressing installment. It's very serious, and although there are a few humorous parts, the trademark
wackiness seems to have been traded in for a more mature feel.
Ruri's less-than-lively personality further reinforces the somber mood, as she
is the main character here.
I have one major problem with Nadesico the Movie .
The background of the story is not too clearly defined. Apparently, there was
an accident that involved Akito, Yurika, and Ines... but they just keep
showing flashbacks of the funeral service and the grave sites.
There is some vague dialogue pertaining to the events, but that's basically
it. I wasn't able to fully appreciate the story due to this. But then since I
watched this fansubbed, there's still a possibility that an officially
released English version would be more explanatory with regards to these
matters.
On the other hand, it's a hoot to watch how the original Nadesico characters
are faring in their now ordinary lives.
The art and animation are excellent -- markedly more refined and detailed
compared to the TV series. Production values are very high, as one can expect.
The ending is a bit saddening and at the same time abrupt. It's as if somebody
just slammed on the brakes -- it's too open-ended to give any sense of
closure.
A strategic approach though, as the producers can easily make another series
or movie to pick up where this one leaves off.
If you have not watched the TV series, I strongly suggest that you skip this
movie until you do, because it will be almost impossible to understand the
plot and all the character / event references as this movie is not meant to
stand alone.
Miscellanies: Martian Successor Nadesico: The Prince of Darkness
Somehow this is not the outcome I had envisioned for the Nadesico
characters...
