In the year AC (After Colony) 195, earthlings have formed five separate
colonies independent from the mother planet.
A central government called the Alliance is established to supposedly ensure
peace on earth and the colonies. But the Alliance does not seem genuinely
interested in the general welfare of the people, and its rule is not
unopposed.
As a response to the situation, five scientists from the five colonies
developed a new type of robotic fighter known as a Gundam -- created from a
powerful metal called Gundanium Alloy.
The Gundams are piloted by five young men who share a common goal -- to end
the Alliance rule. Ironically, the pilots don't know each other... and only when their paths
cross do they begin to see the whole picture.
Review: Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
I have to admit, I was pretty skeptical about Mobile Suit Gundam Wing review. I'm not too fond of mecha, but due to the overwhelming response Gundam Wing
has been receiving from anime fans, I felt obliged to check it out.
After I popped the first DVD in the player, I was greeted by a boring
narration on the political history of the colonies and the Alliance.
Now I hate politics, and I fell asleep before I could get anywhere past the narration. Determined to see what the fuss is about, I tried again. This time, I got to finish the first ep... and that first ep prompted me to
see the rest of the series.
Although Gundam Wing tends to veer towards more political themes, the story
branches out quickly into several engaging character-oriented subplots.
The subplots intersect at certain points, and subsequently form the whole
story -- much like putting the pieces of a puzzle together.
Given this story-telling style, all the characters are portrayed distinctly
and given ample development. It's very hard to further describe the plot
without giving away spoilers.
The art and animation are nothing short of superb. All the characters are drawn beautifully, and there are lots of pretty boys
for anime fangirls to drool over. The mecha designs are very impressive and detailed as well.
Even non-mecha fans won't have a hard time appreciating the Gundams 1995'
magnificence.
Overall, Gundam Wing is a worthwhile series which combines a deep and complex
plot, well-conceptualized characters, and explosive mecha action into one
spectacular package.
