Puni Puni Poemy - Anime Review

Puni Puni Poemy

Poemi Watanabe is a 10-year old girl who dreams of becoming a voice actress. When aliens try to invade the Earth out of the blue however, Poemi discovers that she can transform into a magical girl at will. Thus Poemi takes on the responsibility of saving the Earth -- with very mixed results.

Review: Puni Puni Poemy

Leave all logic at the door, because watching Puni Puni Poemy is going to short circuit your mind and either confuse, entertain, or offend you for the next hour or so.

Poemi Watanabe is your typical cute and kind-hearted but extremely hyper 10-year old female lead character. She's like a cross between Excel Saga and Sailormoon, since she discovers that she can transform into a magical girl after her parents Nabeshin and Ms. Kumikumi get killed by invading aliens.

Poemi becomes an orphan, taken in by her best friend Futaba Aasu's family. Futaba in the meantime is a parody of Cardcaptor Sakura's Tomoyo, her intense adoration for Poemi quickly progressing to an openly lesbian love.

And so Poemi comes to live with the Aasu sisters. There are several Aasu sisters, aged 3 to 28. I can't remember the exact number of Aasu sisters there are, much less recall their names. One of them is an S&M queen in a local club, while another one is a dead ringer for Excel Saga's Hyatt -- except that her boobs are abnormally huge.

Each of the Aasu sisters have some weird quirk, and it is later revealed that they all have special (albeit useless) powers for protecting the Earth. After Poemi and the Aasu sisters start facing off with the aliens, Puni Puni Poemi's sexual content jumps into overdrive.

The Aasu sisters are captured, stripped, and hogtied into various kinky positions; tentacles appear and molest the girls while they moan in ecstasy; Poemi and Futaba are shown rolling on the bed naked and entwined around each other... and did I mention that the aliens have these spiky balls hanging down their groins?

Puni Puni Poemy gets so raunchy that it's almost hentai, the only thing missing being full-blown sexual intercourse -- and 10-year old Poemi is right in the middle of it, furiously and continuously insisting that all she wants is to be a voice actress.

They even crack sex jokes with Futaba's 3-year old sister. If this were a hentai title it would probably be the zaniest and most creative one of the lot, but a regular anime? Twisted, and potentially offensive.

One good thing about Puni Puni Poemy is the visual aspect. Character designs are rather impressive in their uniqueness, despite the aliens' gross spiky balls.

All the girls are either cute or beautiful, yet the characters don't look like they all came out of the same mold. Poemi's transformation sequence is totally cheesy but then that is how it's meant to be, parodying magical girl transformations in general.

Poemi's seiyuu Yumiko Kobayashi carries the ultra-hyper motormouth role very well. She not only speaks hundreds of words per minute, she sprouts nonsense with a conviction that's usually reserved for real lines of dialogue. There's no shortage of talent on her part.

Puni Puni Poemy is a comedy -- one big spoof of the magical girl and hentai genres, done Excel Saga-style. Too bad the humor didn't really sit too well with me.

I mean, what's so funny about Poemi referring to herself as "Kobayashi" (her seiyuu's surname)? Or a couple of nude 10-year old girls in bed? Or aliens with hanging balls? While it's definitely a one-of-a-kind and groundbreaking anime experience, I think I've had enough of Shinichi Watanabe to last me a lifetime.
