Mew and Mica are alien androids sent by their boss to defend the Earth. Unfortunately for our planet, they are the laziest superheroines you will ever
meet.
Now most superheroes would drop whatever they're doing, transform, and proceed
to kick monsters' butts... but these two would do no such thing!
Mew and Mica just can't let their duties interfere with their ice cream,
arguments, or whatever activities they happen to be engaged in at the time.
When they are not Hyper Dolls they seem to be just ordinary, rather cute
school girls, lusted after by the boys. Only one boy knows their secret identities and they have threatened to break
is neck if he tells!
There's an evil one controlling the monsters that are causing havoc, and it's
up to the Hyperdolls to stop him (not that they care).
Hyper Doll Anime Review
Hyper Doll is based on a manga of the same name. To the best of my knowledge, only two volumes have been animated.
As the OVA starts, we are dropped right into the middle of what appears to be
a routine scenario
(i.e. monsters stomping through town, two girls transforming into superhero
mode and defeating them).
No explanation is given with regards to the origin of the Hyper Dolls, or
their boss who has a disconcerting habit of communicating through a pizza
(basically a hologram of him just pops up from a pizza).
Hyper Doll seems to be a parody of magical girl anime like Sailormoon. he emphasis is purely on humor, as there isn't a serious minute throughout.
While worth a chuckle or two, Hyper Doll anime is only mildly amusing. The comedy parts of Sailormoon are much funnier.
The girls' nonchalant attitude towards fighting monsters robs the show of any
sense of excitement, adventure, or danger.
Since they are entirely unconcerned about the outcome of their battles, it is
hard for the audience to work up much of an interest as well.
The anime art isn't bad, but nothing to write home about either. The girls are cute at best.
I have read elsewhere that the US release by Pioneer features funny live
action clips with live actors which is unusual.
The version I watched, however, doesn't have any extras. I would have liked to see that, as the anime itself is generally a waste of
time and money. If they don't care, why should we?
Miscellanies: Hyper Doll
The closing credits feature two live singing and dancing Japanese girls
(possibly the seiyuus) with one of the most ghastly dance routines I
have ever seen.
