The first of the summer anime that I've finished watching (for some strange
reason I have yet to finish No. 6, much as I love it...), also gets to be the
first reviewed. And yeah, I still have to review practically everything from spring.
I'm just getting this out of the way while it's fresh in my mind and I'm still
mentally going “D'awwwwww”.
Usagi Drop Anime Review
When Daikichi's grandfather passes away, the bachelor is amazed to learn the
man had an illegitimate child! Let's be honest here, we'd all be pretty
surprised if we found out our grandfather had some random kid. Probably. Not much surprises me anymore, but BACK ON TOPIC.
Most of the family members are like, “Gross, illegitimate kid, keep it away
from me” because apparently because are jerks about illegitimate children.
The big exception?
Thirty-year-old, unmarried working man Daikichi. He's more than a little annoyed with his family members being so unwilling
to get involved with adorable little Rin. What's he do about it? Well, the obvious answer is to adopt her.
The series revolves around him figuring out how to raise a kid (hilarious),
and balance it with the other aspects of his life.
The Characters: Usagi Drop
Rin and Daikichi. Okay, imagine bringing some kid into your life who was
already around seven years old before you even knew she existed. Imagine that you then adopt that kid.
And you've never tried to raise a child before, so you're just taking a
whole lot of wild guesses and hoping you don't royally screw it up. Of course, that kid isn't exactly used to you either and she's totally cute
and shy.
Seriously, this relationship was shown perfectly throughout the anime, and
it couldn't have been done nearly so well if the characters weren't
excellent.
Daikichi is exactly what I think it would look like if some 30-year-old
bachelor was suddenly raising a kid, moments of figuring out how to put his
new little girl's hair up, what he should be feeding her, and so on.
Rin is a sweet little girl whose father just died, but she's always bright
and cheerful I WANT TO KIDNAP HER. If she wasn't an anime character, I would do it, legitimately. (Although kidnapping is not a legitimate thing to do, I suppose). The Cute: Just look at it.
Conclusion?
Honestly, I'm having trouble summing up my feelings for this anime, which is
why this review is (1 a day late and 2) pretty short, comparatively
speaking. It was adorable. It was sweet. It was a perfect piece of slice-of-life.
It was adorable little girls and awkward guys and first days of school and
questions about life, missing mothers and what parenting is really about,
whether your kid calls you “dad” or not.
It was...something you should really watch, it you want a nice look at
parenting from a non-traditional perspective.
There were some stand-out moments, particularly one point where Daikichi
suggests to Rin he adopt her and she tells him no, because she already has a
father and he's just...Daikichi. It's brilliant.
And thankfully, they didn't touch on some of the things that the manga did
later on (If you're curious, Google it. I refuse to discuss it here).
My rating: 9/10
I can't think of anything really wrong with it that's obvious, but...it just
doesn't feel like a 10 to me. If that makes sense.
