Tenchi Forever! | Anime Review

Tenchi Forever!

One fine day, as always, Ryoko and Aeka are busy fighting over Tenchi. Tenchi takes a walk into the mountains for a breather, but he never returns.

Six months later, there is still no sign of him. Together, Ryoko and Aeka move to the city and use their time off from work to search for Tenchi.

A chance encounter reveals to them an older, more mature Tenchi with no memory of Ryoko or Aeka. To make matters worse, he seems to have found a new love in the person of Haruna.

Tenchi Forever! Anime Review

Tenchi Forever is the most serious Tenchi movie yet. There isn't much humor -- the funnies and comical theatrics stop the moment Tenchi disappears.

Tenchi Forever isn't so much about Tenchi. About 2/3 of screening time is devoted to Aeka and Ryoko, so it's actually more of a buddy movie.

We see the two girls work, live, laugh, and cry together amidst their search for Tenchi. There are a lot of female bonding sessions and you'll discover that a deep friendship actually lies beneath Ryoko and Aeka's constant fighting and bickering.

Pacing is a bit of a drag, and it would've been a lot better if things didn't develop so slowly. There are also some sexual scenes between Tenchi and Haruna. It's all done in an artful and non-explicit way though, so this is no hentai or xxx fest.

The art and animation differ from the usual style with longer and leaner character designs, but are excellent nonetheless.

The overall look is quite similar to the series "Tenchi in Tokyo". The ending part sort of ties everything together and indirectly implies who loves Tenchi most and vice-versa... but that's something you'll have to see for yourself.

Tenchi Forever is okay. It's a bit slow if you're used to the livelier pacing of past Tenchi incarnations, but it's also something die-hard Tenchi fans wouldn't want to miss.

Miscellanies: Tenchi Forever!

Tenchi Forever is actually known as "Tenchi Muyo in Love 2" in Japan. This is supposed to be Tenchi's third and final movie. But can they really stop themselves from milking the Tenchi franchise? I have no idea but I wouldn't be surprised if more Tenchi pops up in the future.
